Homemade Vanilla Extract – #Recipe

I have been wanting to make my own vanilla for a while now and I finally got around to doing it!
I buy vanilla beans in bulk because I go through so many of them and it is just so much cheaper. I put them in my food saver and then pop them in the freezer. I pull out as many as I need at a time and then I always have them when I need them. It was just plain ridiculous that I was paying premium prices for pure vanilla extract when I could easily make my own.

And so I did.

It’s very easy. You will need:

Homemade Vanilla Extract

PRINT THIS RECIPE

I pint of vodka
6 vanilla beans
a mason jar or other glass jar for storing the vanilla

You just pour the vodka into the glass jar.

Then cut the vanilla beans almost to the end, splitting them in half but not completely cutting them in half.

The vanilla beans go into the vodka, screw on the lid and put in a dark place. Give the jar a shake twice a week or so. It will be ready to use in two months.

The cost for this pint of vanilla to me is about $10 not counting the jar. I have a lot of canning jars around here, heh. But that is so much less than I would pay to purchase that much vanilla. It can be perpetuated by adding more vodka and beans.

Woo hoo!
