Buckeyes Candy Recipe: the Best Chocolate Peanut Butter Treats

If you’ve ever had a Buckeye candy, you already know just how irresistible these chocolate peanut butter treats are. Creamy peanut butter centers dipped in rich chocolate—what’s not to love? Simple to make and impossible to resist, Buckeyes are a classic treat that shows up at holidays, parties, game days, and family gatherings year after year. Today I’ll show you how to make this Buckeye candy recipe at home!

The Origin of Buckeye Candy

Buckeye candies get their name from the buckeye tree, which produces a nut that resembles these treats—dark brown on the outside with a lighter center peeking through. The buckeye is especially meaningful in Ohio, where it’s the state tree and a beloved symbol. Naturally, this candy became closely associated with the Ohio State Buckeyes, making it a staple at football tailgates, celebrations, and holidays throughout the state.

While Buckeyes don’t grow on trees, they’ve become one of Ohio’s most iconic homemade candies. Families pass down recipes, tweak the chocolate-to-peanut-butter ratio, and proudly serve them as a sweet nod to tradition.

Buckeyes strike the perfect balance between sweet, salty, and creamy. The peanut butter center is soft and rich, while the chocolate coating adds just enough snap to make each bite satisfying. Best of all, they require no baking, making them an easy treat for beginners and seasoned candy makers alike.

How to Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Buckeyes

Ingredients

  • Creamy peanut butter
  • Powdered sugar
  • Butter
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Shortening, paraffin wax, or coconut oil (for smooth dipping)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix peanut butter, softened butter, and powdered sugar until smooth and firm.
  2. I like to weigh each ball so they end up the same size. 25g is a nice size.
  3. Roll the mixture into small balls and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. Chill/freeze the peanut butter balls for at least 10 minutes to firm up.
  5. Melt the chocolate with shortening or wax until smooth. You can do this in the microwave in 1 minute bursts at 50% power. Stir and check between each minute.
  6. Using a toothpick, dip each ball into the chocolate, leaving a small circle of peanut butter exposed on top—just like a real buckeye.
  7. Place back on parchment and allow the chocolate to set completely.

Tips for Perfect Buckeyes

  • Chill the peanut butter balls well before dipping to prevent melting.
  • Use high-quality chocolate for the best flavor.
  • Store Buckeyes in the refrigerator to keep them firm and fresh.
