Citric Acid for Bath Bombs

You can usually find citric acid among the canning supplies at the grocery stores and it’s easily available online. When looking for citric acid, you want food grade quality since you’ll be using it on your skin.

Follow precautions when using citric acid. These should be readily labeled on the package, but the general precautions are to avoid direct contact with eyes and to avoid breathing in the dust when pouring the citric acid to measure it. Food grade citric acid is safe and commonly used in food and beauty products, but it can be irritating.

What is the purpose of citric acid in bath bombs?

The citric acid (acid being the key) reacts with the baking soda in bath bombs and creates the fizzing action we love.

Citric acid can be substituted with other acids like cream of tartar, lemon juice, or buttermilk powder. However, I haven’t tested this recipe with those ingredients.

How to Make Lavender Bath Bombs

Step One

Combine the baking soda, epsom salt, citric acid, and cornstarch in a large bowl. Whisk the ingredients together until they are combined and there are no clumps.

Step Two

Combine the almond oil and essential oil in a separate, small bowl. Stir the wet ingredients to combine thoroughly.

Step Three

Add the oil mixture to the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.

Note: Use your hands to make sure the oils are incorporated into the dry ingredients.

Note: The resulting texture should be like that of wet sand. When you squeeze the mixture together, it should form a clump in your hand. If it doesn’t, slowly add an additional ? teaspoon of oil at a time until your mixture comes together.

Step Four

Divide your mixture in half and move one half to a separate bowl. Add the mica powder to the mixture a little at a time until you reach your desired color.

Step Five

Add a small amount (about ¼ teaspoon) of lavender buds to the bottom of one half of your bath bomb mold. This will be the top of your finished bath bomb.

Step Six

Add a small amount of white bath bomb mixture and then a small amount of purple mixture. Continue creating layers until the mold is overflowing.

Repeat this step for the second side of the bath bomb mold. Gently pack down the mixture before adding the final mixture to each side.

Note: Make sure that the bath bomb mixture is heaped on both sides before squeezing the mold together. The excess mixture will ensure that the mold gets filled tightly and any extra will be pushed out of the seam of the mold.

Step Seven

Gently release the bath bomb from the mold one side at a time and let it rest on a flat surface lined with plastic wrap, wax paper, or parchment paper.

Note: If you are having issues getting the bath bomb out of the mold, gently tap the mold with the backside of a spoon.

Step Five

Let the bath bombs sit overnight or up to 24 hours before handling or use. This will allow the bath bomb to set up and harden so it doesn’t fall apart.

Step Six

To use the bath bombs, run a bath and then drop the bath bomb into the water. The mixture should fizz and dissipate into the bath water.

Note: to keep the lavender buds from going down the tub drain, scoop them out before draining the water or use a drain filter.
