Smell is one of our most powerful senses. A certain scent can take us back in time to our mother’s kitchen or remind us of a special person. It’s used as a marketing tool – when you walk into a grocery store you always smell something delicious baking, don’t you?

When I shower I always have a sugar scrub of some kind to use. Making my own scrub allows me to know exactly what is in the mix. I love how my skin feels after I’ve used a scrub with a rich oil like sweet almond. A pleasing scent is a bonus. I found both from Nature’s Truth.

An essential oil is a distillation of the fruit, flower or herb from which it is named. You can also find essential oil blends which are just that; a blend of two or more essential oils. These oils are very strong and should not be put directly on the skin.

How to Use Essential Oils

Essential oils and blends can be used in a variety of DIY projects. I know a lot of people make soap for personal use. When I had my goats I used to make and sell goat’s milk soap. Now I get it from my friend. It’s not that hard, you just have to be careful when working with the lye.

When making any soap using lye safety must come first so you MUST use protective eyewear and rubber gloves because trust me, that stuff B.U.R.N.S. Don’t ask how I learned that, but it involved NOT wearing rubber gloves.

How to Make a Homemade Sugar Scrub with Essential Oils

I mentioned above that I also enjoy making a sugar scrub for my personal use. Through the years, I found that I prefer sugar scrubs to salt scrubs as they don’t sting if you happen to have a paper cut or such on your hands.

The sugar does just as nice a job on the skin as the salt. Sugar scrubs are very easy to make and you don’t need to use much to get the job done. The sugar dissolves nicely in the warm water of a shower and I find I am left with smooth skin that has been moisturized by the almond and coconut oils.

Homemade Sugar Scrub Recipe

1 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup Sweet Almond Oil
1/4 cup coconut oil
10 – 20 drops Essential Oil

Add half a cup of the sugar to a small bowl
As the almond oil and mix well.
Add the coconut oil and mix well.
Add the rest of the sugar and mix well.
Add the essential oil and mix well
Store in two small mason jars.

It’s so nice to take a relaxing shower to have a quality soap with a complementary sugar scrub.
