Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a medium baking dish (about 8x8 or similar).
Crush the crackers--you want some texture, not fine crumbs.
Chop up the vegetables.
Melt the butter in a pan. Sauté the chopped onions in butter over medium-high heat until they are caramelized.
Add the water and milk to the crushed-up crackers and mix them together.
Add the eggs to your mixture of crackers and combine well.
Mix in the vegetables.
Combine ingredients: Mix well. The mixture should be moist but not soupy — add a bit more milk or water if it looks too dry.
Season: Stir in salt, pepper, and any herbs you like (poultry seasoning or sage add that classic dressing flavor).
Pour into the prepared dish. Bake for 30–40 minutes, until golden brown and set in the center.
