Old-Fashioned Saltine Cracker Dressing

Servings 0

Ingredients

  • 4 sleeves about 45 saltine crackers, crushed
  • 4 large eggs beaten
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 3 celery stalks finely chopped
  • 2 carrot grated or finely chopped
  • 1 cup water add more if needed for moisture
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: a pinch of poultry seasoning or sage for extra flavor

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a medium baking dish (about 8x8 or similar).
  • Crush the crackers--you want some texture, not fine crumbs.
  • Chop up the vegetables.
  • Melt the butter in a pan. Sauté the chopped onions in butter over medium-high heat until they are caramelized.
  • Add the water and milk to the crushed-up crackers and mix them together.
  • Add the eggs to your mixture of crackers and combine well.
  • Mix in the vegetables.
  • Combine ingredients: Mix well. The mixture should be moist but not soupy — add a bit more milk or water if it looks too dry.
  • Season: Stir in salt, pepper, and any herbs you like (poultry seasoning or sage add that classic dressing flavor).
  • Pour into the prepared dish. Bake for 30–40 minutes, until golden brown and set in the center.
