Weekend Getaway to Dahlonega, Georgia
I love Dahlonega. This was actually my fourth time visiting in the past few years, and Iโm already planning my next trip. Thereโs just something magical about this small townโgorgeous scenery, cozy shops, incredible food, and the fact that it’s surrounded by over a dozen local vineyards doesnโt hurt either! A Dahlonega weekend getaway is a perfect escape when youโre craving a slower pace and a little fresh mountain air.
The town itself is centered around a charming square, anchored by the Dahlonega Gold Museum, which sits in the historic courthouse building. Whether youโre sipping coffee, shopping at the boutiques, or just enjoying the mountain views, the vibe is pure relaxation.
Where to Stay
There are several lovely boutique inns within walking distance of downtown, but my go-to spot is the Dahlonega Square Hotel & Villas. The rooms are spacious, the beds are comfy, and the location couldnโt be better. Plus, their wine tasting room is right on site, and the best wine tour in town leaves right from their front porch! Bonus: theyโve got a fancy self-serve coffee machine in the lobby that made my mornings even better. I always book through Expedia for amazing deals here!

A Little Dahlonega History
Dahlonega, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, holds a unique place in American history. It was the site of the first major U.S. gold rush in 1828โyes, before California! The name โDahlonegaโ even comes from a Cherokee word meaning โyellowโ or โgold.โ Though the gold boom eventually slowed, the town preserved its heritage and charm. Today, Dahlonega is known for its wineries, historic sites, and vibrant arts scene. Itโs even served as the filming location for several Hallmark Channel moviesโand once you visit, youโll see why!

A Weekend to Savor
We kicked off our weekend with lunch just a mile out of town at Public House. I had a delicious flatbread, and the staff couldnโt have been more welcoming. One of the things I love most about this area is how genuinely friendly everyone is. The dรฉcor was modern and cozyโjust the right atmosphere to settle into weekend mode.
That afternoon, some good friends joined us. While waiting for their arrival, we relaxed on the front porch of the inn. Once they were settled, we strolled into town for some shopping, coffee, and a fantastic dinner at Spirits Tavern. Their build-your-own burger menu is so fun, and they have amazing craft cocktails too.

Wine Tour Saturday
Saturday, we booked a wine tour through DSH Transportation/Dahlonega Wine Tours, and as always, they delivered. The tour included four stops, and each one had its own personality and amazing views:

- Wolf Mountain Vineyards: Gorgeous setting, amazing views, and a delicious white flatbread pizza with balsamic drizzle. Their brunch buffet looked incredibleโdefinitely on my list for next time!
- Kaya Vineyards: A large patio with vineyard views, plus a super cute gift shop I can never resist.
- Cottage Vineyard & Winery: A fun group tasting experience with stunning scenery. They give you two wine options at a time and let you choose your favorite.
- Yonah Mountain Vineyards: A grand finale with sweeping views and a huge, covered patioโgreat for relaxing with a glass in hand.

That evening, we had dinner at Undergroundโa cozy spot with a great atmosphere, large covered patio, and tasty bites.
Sunday Vibes
Sunday brunch was at Bourbon Street Grille, where we devoured beignets, crab cake benedict, and lots of hot coffee. We thought weโd go tubing that afternoon, but despite it being August, the weather turned cool and drizzly. So instead, we took a scenic 35-minute drive to Helen, Georgia for a change of scenery.

A Quick Detour to Helen
Helen is a Bavarian-style town nestled in the North Georgia mountains, full of charm and classic alpine vibes. Originally a logging town, Helen was reimagined in the late 1960s as a German-themed village to boost tourismโand it worked! With its cobblestone streets, timber-framed buildings, and themed shops, it’s now one of Georgiaโs most popular mountain getaways.
We wandered the town, did a little shopping, and grabbed lattes from Yonah Coffee Company. The drive between Dahlonega and Helen is stunningโwinding roads, mountain views, and all the lush green you could want.

On the way back, we stopped at NOFO Brew Co, a laid-back brewery with seltzer on tapโperfect for something light. Then we hit Limoges Cellars, a peaceful winery with cozy porch seating and fuzzy blankets to keep warm. That chill in the air felt more like October than August, but it made the wine even cozier.

Dinner Sunday night was at GrapeVine’s, a quaint spot serving up delicious Italian comfort foodโexactly what we needed after a full day.

A Few More Highlights
On a past trip, we did a Ghost Tour, which was so fun! Itโs a walking tour through town filled with local legends, spooky tales, and of course, stops at all three tasting rooms on the square.
We also visited the Dahlonega Gold Museum, which is well worth the stop. It’s both educational and funโperfect for families or history buffs.
If you ever get the chance to visit in winter, the town square lights up with white twinkle lights, and you can take a horse-drawn carriage ride around town. It seriously feels like youโve walked onto a Hallmark movie set.
Final Thoughts
Dahlonega is one of those places that stays with you. Whether you’re sipping wine, shopping local, or just slowing down and soaking up the mountain air, itโs a small-town escape that offers so much. And the best part? Once I park my car for the weekend, I rarely need to move itโthe walkability is part of the magic.
If youโre looking for a cozy weekend getaway full of charm, flavor, and a bit of adventure, Dahlonega might just become your new favorite too.
