Planning a Magical Adult Disney Vacation: Tips, Tricks & Highlights
Years ago, we spent one full day at EPCOT without the kids, but every other Disney trip weโve done has been a family adventure. Now that our children are older, it was such a treat to return just the two of usโto soak up the magic, embrace our inner kids, and enjoy Disney in a whole new way as a couple. As much as weโve cherished our family trips, it was a refreshing change not to juggle strollers, nap schedules, or the moods of tired, hungry little ones (and teens!). This time, we did exactly what we wanted, when we wantedโand it truly felt magical to enjoy an adult Disney vacation!
A Disney vacation is one of those bucket-list experiences that truly rewards a little planning ahead. From reserving the right meals to scoring Lightning Lane passes, a bit of prep can make your trip run smoother and feel less overwhelmingโeven in the midst of all the magic.
Planning Ahead: What You Need to Know for your Adult Disney Vacation
Watch for park ticket deals on Undercover Tourist, or you can buy directly from Walt Disney World. You will upload these to your My Disney Experience app. Your first day at a park, the gate Cast Member will scan this from your app and activate your ticket and hand you a Key to the World card. You can also order MagicBands and link these to your park tickets. These bands will also link to all of your reservations, unlock your resort room, and can be used to make purchases. We just used the credit card style cards. One disadvantage to Swan/Dolphin, although pretty minor, is that your room will not open with your World card or magic band.
You donโt need to reserve every meal in advance, but for popular themed dining spots, itโs smart to book early. Guests staying at Disney resortsโincluding the Swan and Dolphin hotelsโcan make dining reservations up to 60 days before their stay. It is a good idea to look at crowd calendars and map out your days and then explore dining options that fit. Look over menus and plan when and where you want to eat. Be ready to get on the My Disney Experience app early morning exactly 60 days ahead of your check-in date to book those hard-to-get reservations. When staying on site, you can book for your whole trip at that time.

All Disney resort guests enjoy early park entry, but if you’re staying at a Deluxe Resort (including Swan and Dolphin), donโt miss the Extended Evening Hoursโtheyโre limited and make for a much more relaxed experience at some of the busiest parks.
Lightning Lanes: Youโll also have access to Lightning Lane pass bookings 7 days in advance for your entire trip by staying on-siteโa big advantage when trying to get into top-tier attractions. We found it very worth it to purchase both the single passes and multi passes for our main day in each of the parks. Research ahead of time to plan which rides you want to book and for which day. Again, if staying on property, you can book this 7 days before your trip for your entire trip. There is a Premier Pass that is quite expensive in which you can ride each of the Lightning Lane Pass rides once during that day at that one park at any time you want. I personally think that would only be necessary if you couldnโt get any of the rides you wanted when trying to book the other passes, during very heavy crowd days, or maybe just to experience the flexibility of not having your day dictated by time slots.
Everything Takes Longer Than You Expect
Disney World is massive. Transportation between parks, walking through resorts, and simply getting from point A to B often takes twice as long as youโd think. Build in buffer time and expect delays, especially during busy seasons.
Security & What to Pack
Security is smooth these daysโjust walk through scanners single-fileโbut donโt bring prohibited items. We were pulled aside for a tiny Bluetooth speaker we forgot was in our backpack and had to toss it to continue. Tip: Hold umbrellas out in front of you to avoid triggering bag checks.
**Also: pack ponchos! Afternoon storms are very common and can roll in without warning.
Where We Stayed: Why I Recommend the Swan & Dolphin for an Adult Disney Vacation
If youโre looking for Deluxe-level perks without the full Disney Deluxe price, Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin are an incredible value. Hereโs why:
- Eligible for Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours
- Walking distance to EPCOT and the Boardwalk
- Access to boats and the Skyliner
- Fantastic dining options and beautifully maintained grounds

We booked a Fireworks View Deluxe Room at the Dolphin and were blown awayโtwo balconies, one of which was huge, and both with stunning views. Be aware: thereโs a resort fee (~$45/day) and daily parking fee if you drive.

Bonus tip: Enroll in the Marriott Bonvoy rewards program before bookingโyou might score a free night or some nice perks during your stay! I also find great deals on Expedia.
Arrival & First Night: Disney Magic Without Park Tickets
We arrived at the Dolphin around 5 p.m., had a smooth check-in, and headed out to explore. A walk to the Boardwalk, a themed cocktail at AbracadaBar, a boat to EPCOT, and a Skyliner ride to the Riviera Hotel for a sunset cocktail at the rooftop restaurant Topolinoโs Terraceโall without park admission or reservations!

Back at the room, we caught our first fireworks show from the balcony, then grabbed guacamole with grilled pineapple (the single portion was huge!) at Rosa Mexicano on the first floor of the hotel.

Day-by-Day Highlights
Day 1: Magic Kingdom
- Arrived early for 8:30 a.m. Early Entryโget there by 8:00 a.m. or earlier to actually get anywhere near the front of the popular ride lines.
- During the Early Entry window, we rode Peter Pan & Itโs a Small World and then used Lightning Lanes for Tron, Seven Dwarfs, Tiana, and Haunted Mansion. We scattered in other rides with shorter lines as we passed by them in the park.

- Participated in the Flag Retreat Ceremony in Town Square โ a truly special moment. My husband, an Army veteran, was randomly selected to take part, which was a huge honor. This daily tradition has been held since the very first Disney Park opened, and it’s an emotional, patriotic moment worth pausing your park schedule. Even as a spectator, itโs a beautiful experience that stands out from the usual park excitement.

**Afternoon rain? Duck into a show or indoor attraction until it clears.
**Transportation tip: If youโre staying at the Swan/Dolphin, their Magic Kingdom bus goes to the Transportation Center. Instead, walk next door to the Yacht Clubโtheir bus takes you straight to Magic Kingdom’s front gate.
**Pro tip: Once you use a Lightning Lane pass, you can book anotherโeven in a different park. Just note: one ride per day per pass.
Adult Disney Vacation Must: Sip, Savor, & Sparkle
A highlight of our adult Disney experience: Sip, Savor, and Sparkleโa private event at the California Grill (Contemporary Resort) with open bar, appetizers, desserts, and a breathtaking Magic Kingdom fireworks view. Totally worth it! You must book this ahead.

Day 2: EPCOT
- Entered via International Gateway (perfect if staying at Swan/Dolphin) for another Early Entry day.
- Rode Remyโs Ratatouille Adventure with no wait during the Early Entry window.
- Used Lightning Lanes for Soarinโ, Nemo, Spaceship Earth, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
- Heads-up: Even with a pass, Guardians takes 30+ minutes, so budget your time.
- Dinner at the San Angel Inn Restaurante in the Mexico Pavilion.

- After dinner, we wandered around the World Showcase, shopped a little, and found a nice spot for front-row fireworks viewing.
Day 3: Hollywood Studios
- Tower of Terrorโwe headed straight there and rode it once during the Early Entry window and then had an early morning Lightning Lane Pass to immediately ride it a second time.
- Rise of the Resistance, Toy Story Mania, and Slinky Dog Dash were our other Lightning Lanes for the day.
- We had a reservation (which is a must) to enjoy the amazing atmosphere and unique cocktails at Ogaโs Cantina in the Star Wars area.

- After riding a few more rides, we relaxed in the air conditioning of the 50โs Prime Time Cafรฉ Lounge for the themed experience without committing to the full menu. I loved trying the PB&J Cocktail.

- We finished off our evening at Hollywood Studios with a dinner reservation at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater. Really cool atmosphere and great burgers!
Day 4: Animal Kingdom + EPCOT
- Animal Kingdom is great for a shorter, slightly slower-paced day.
- Used Lightning Lanes to ride Avatar, Expedition Everest, Naโvi River Journey, and Kilimanjaro Safaris. In between, we strolled through trails, sights, and shows.

- We had a late lunch at the Biergarten German buffet in EPCOT (easy access from Beach Club bus stop).
- Afternoon break at the Dolphin pool.

- Much-needed rest before a relaxing evening where we stayed at the hotel and had dinner at The Fountain which has fabulous milkshakes. There are multiple great dining choices in this area, but we just wanted casual and simple. We were pretty darned exhausted by this point!
Day 5: Blizzard Beach + Late-Night Magic Kingdom
- Morning at Blizzard Beach waterpark for a refreshing, low-key start to the day.
- Crepes at the France Pavilion at EPCOT.
- Avoided a thunderstorm by hiding out in the Guardians line (yes we rode it again!)
- Took full advantage of Extended Evening Hours at Magic Kingdom:
- Rode Jungle Cruise, Pirates, wandered, shopped, and enjoyed a late-night Caseyโs Corner hotdog under the castle glow.
- Rode Jungle Cruise, Pirates, wandered, shopped, and enjoyed a late-night Caseyโs Corner hotdog under the castle glow.

Day 6: Final Adventures
- Slept in and actually started the day late.
- Entered EPCOT from the Swan/Dolphin side and went left around the World Showcase to explore the rest of the countries on our way to another Lightning Lane for Guardians of the Galaxy.
- Then hopped next door to the Space 220 Lounge for a space-themed appetizer and cocktail. Youโll want a reservation to get a spot at the lounge or restaurant.

- Evening happy hour at BlueZoo, charcuterie at the Crewโs Cup Lounge at the Yacht Club resort, and fireworks at Magic Kingdom.

Day 7: Disney Springs & A Relaxing Finale
- We checked out of Dolphin and checked into the Drury Plaza Hotel near Disney Springs.
- We walked to Disney Springs for a dose of shopping, snacking, and soaking in the last bit of Disney magic. With so many fantastic restaurants to choose from, it was hard to decideโbut we eventually landed at The Edison, known for its unique steampunk decor and upscale gastropub fare. The atmosphere was just as fun as the food, and it made for a perfect sendoff meal.

- We took a bus from Disney Springs to the Polynesian resort in hopes of getting into the Trader Samโs tiki bar, but even getting our name on the list 30 minutes before it opened still would have had us waiting at least two hoursโunfortunately this hot spot doesnโt take a reservation.
- We took the monorail to Epcot and booked a last minute spot at the Coral Reef restaurant lucking into an aquarium-front table. Enjoyed some lobster bisque and bread pudding and then headed over for one last Lightning Pass onto Guardians.
- Afterward, we returned using the hotel’s scheduled bus to the Drury, which turned out to be a hidden gem for wrapping up our trip. This hotel is an excellent value and ideal for those looking to wind down without leaving the magic behind:
- Nightly hot appetizer buffet included with your stay
- A coupon for three complimentary drinks (yes, adultsโthis means wine, beer, or cocktails!)
- A wonderful breakfast buffet with something for everyone
Extra Tips to Remember
- Joffreyโs Coffee offers a military/veteran discountโjust ask!
- Buy the refillable popcorn bucket earlyโtotally worth it.
- Buses donโt go park-to-park, but they do go between resorts and Disney Springsโuse this to your advantage.
- Stop by any Guest Services desk or cart to pick up a complimentary Celebration pinโyouโll be surprised by how many Cast Members go out of their way to offer congratulations throughout your visit. It truly added an extra layer of magic to our week!

- Guardians of the Galaxy is easily our favorite rideโworth every visit!
- For an adult Disney vacation, consider planning your trip around one of EPCOTโs many popular festivals. During our visit, we had the chance to experience the Flower & Garden Festival, which added even more beauty to the park along with a variety of delicious food and drink kiosks offering small plates and creative cocktailsโperfect for strolling, sipping, and sampling as you explore. Maybe next time we’ll aim for the Food & Wine Festivalโit’s definitely on our Disney bucket list!
Final Thoughts
Disney is magical, but itโs also busy, expensive, and a workout. With some planning, comfortable shoes, smart transportation tricks, and a few relaxing moments built in, you can make the most of your time and truly enjoy the adventure. Whether you’re there for thrills, food, or just the fireworks, thereโs something for everyoneโeven the tired adults who just want a crepe and a cocktail.
