These ingredients will yield about 32 1.5” balls. You can easily half, double, or triple this recipe depending on how many you need.

Recipe Additions and Substitutions

The staple ingredients in this recipe are ground sausage, Bisquick mix, and shredded cheese. As long as those stay the same, you can play with this recipe and adjust it to your liking.

Ground Sausage

This version of cheesy sausage balls uses ground pork breakfast sausage. You can substitute this for any other kind of ground sausage.

Turn up the heat by using spicy sausage or modify the flavor by using some Italian sausage. You can use any type including turkey sausage. You may need to adjust the butter if using a very lean sausage.

Bisquick Mix

Bisquick is what holds this recipe together. Without it, you’d need a homemade substitution of the mix.

Shredded Cheese

You can use any type of shredded cheese that you’d like. I recommend using freshly grated cheese since it’s not coated and will melt nicely. However, I’ve seen the recipe turn out just fine with pre-shredded as well.

The original recipe uses cheddar cheese. This version uses pepper jack as it adds spice from the green and red peppers in the cheese which works really well with a breakfast sausage flavor.

How to Make Sausage Balls With Pancake Mix

Did you know you could make one of the best sausage recipes with pancake mix? It might sound weird at first, but trust me, it’s delicious.

Follow these quick and easy steps to enjoy these delicious sausage balls!

Step One

Preheat your oven to 350? and line one or two sheet pans with parchment paper. You can use one pan and cook multiple batches or use two for quick baking.

Step Two

Measure out and add all the ingredients to a large mixing bowl.

Tip: The Bisquick mix should be measured by the spoon and level method. Spoon the mix into a measuring cup and level it. Don’t pack down the mixture into your measuring cup. Too much Bisquick will result in dry sausage balls that don’t hold together very well.

Step Three

Get messy! Use your hands to combine all of the ingredients. Make sure to mix the sausage thoroughly with the dry ingredients. If you feel you can’t get everything to come together, you can add a tiny bit more butter.

Tip: you could also use a stand mixer with the paddle attachment. I find it’s easier and more efficient to just use my hands though.

Step Four

Turn the sausage mixture into 1.5” balls and place them on the pan lined with parchment paper. They should be placed about an inch apart. The balls should be tightly packed and uniform in size.

Tip: I like to use a cookie scoop for this step. Depending on the scoop size, you won’t want to fill it all the way when scooping.

Step Five

Bake the sausage balls for 14-18 minutes until thoroughly cooked through and golden brown on the outside.

Tip: The internal temperature should be at least 160? for ground pork sausage.

How to Serve and Store This Easy Sausage Ball Recipe

Cheesy sausage balls are the perfect appetizer, snack, or breakfast accompaniment. You can serve them warm or room temperature with or without dipping sauces.

I like to serve them on a platter with toothpicks for guests to use to pick them up and dip them.

Dipping Sauce Options for Sausage Balls

You have a lot of options for dipping sauces for these sausage balls. Here are just some of your options:

  • White gravy
  • Brown gravy
  • Jam or jelly
  • BBQ sauce
  • Ranch dressing
  • Vinaigrette
  • Honey mustard
  • Cheese sauce
  • Maple syrup

Storage

Another reason I love this recipe is that you can make it ahead of time and take it out on game day or any time you get the craving. To store freshly cooked sausage balls, put them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days.

You can also freeze this recipe cooked or uncooked. To store uncooked sausage balls, place the ball on a pan and freeze. Remove them from the pan and place them in a container or freezer bag until ready to use. Place the frozen balls on a pan and cook them thoroughly.

You can also freeze cooked sausage balls. Simply store them in a bag or container until ready to use. Take them out, thaw them, and reheat them thoroughly. They last in the freezer for about 3-4 months.
